Ingredients
Salisbury Steaks
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons Black Forge No. 4
- 1/2 small onion, finely grated or minced
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil, for cooking
Onion Gravy
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon Black Forge No. 4
- Optional: 1 teaspoon ketchup or Dijon mustard for extra depth
- Optional: sliced mushrooms
Directions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Black Forge No. 4, and minced onion.
- Mix gently until combined, being careful not to overwork the beef.
- Shape the mixture into 4 to 5 oval patties.
- Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the patties for 4 to 5 minutes per side, until browned. They do not need to be fully cooked through yet.
- Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions.
- Cook onions for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often, until softened and golden.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to create a smooth gravy.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, Black Forge No. 4, and ketchup or Dijon if using.
- Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over the top.
- Cover and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Serve warm with plenty of gravy spooned over the top.
Salt Spring Tip
Browning the patties first builds that old-fashioned skillet flavor before the gravy even starts. Let the onions get soft and golden before adding the broth so the gravy tastes rich, cozy, and homemade instead of rushed.
Serve With
Serve with mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, green beans, peas, roasted carrots, or soft dinner rolls. This is the kind of dinner that belongs on a plate with extra gravy and something simple on the side.
